BVHS Coaches Clinics 2021-2022 Season
BVHS has partnered with Hockey Alberta to offer several coaching clinics throughout the course of the season. For all the details regarding the BVHS Coaches Clinics please see below. We are very excited to offer these coaches clinics at no charge. Hockey Alberta will supply facilitators for each of these seminars.
*The Skating and Puck Skills are run through HCR therefore have an HCR sign-up. The rest of the clinics have a different sign-up sheet.
Skating - DATE TBD
The Instructional Stream - Skating Clinic will focus on teaching coaches fundamental skating skills: balance, forward and backward striding and crossovers, transition and change of direction agility and how to communicate and provide tips to their players while teaching these skills.

This workshop style will support work together with the coaches in attendance to make a coaching philosophy as well as creating a road map for the upcoming season. This will act as a guideline and aid in being prepared all season long and as a result, will provide the players with a positive hockey experience.

Game and Bench Management - DATE TBD
Preparation is key in the coaching world. This seminar goes in-depth on a variety of game-day scenarios that all coaches should consider. Topics include pre-game prep, game cards, coach responsibilities, team meetings, pre-game/intermission speeches, line changes, line matches, communication from the bench.

The Instructional Stream - Skills Clinic will focus on the fundamental puck handling skills: stick handling, puck protection and individual offensive tactics. This clinic will give coaches in attendance techniques and fundamentals into teaching these specific skills enhancing the creative and overall skill of the players.

Elite Player Habits - DATE TBD
What does it take for players to get to the next level or reach their optimal potential? This seminar dives into a “Top 10 List” of the habits and characteristics that are required to play at a high level. These habits can be implemented and taught to all levels of minor hockey players at different stages of development and detail.

Thinking the play starts once the puck drops is too late. Having a plan and having everyone on the same page are important things to consider when heading into each and every draw. This session will breakdown what teams are doing in all 3 zones and provide examples to coaches to implement into their strategy in on both sides of the puck.

Effective Practice Principles - DATE TBD
Practice is the majority of the season and where coaches make a true impact on player development. In every practice, players either get better or they get worse as a result of the coach’s practice. This seminar will identify crucial aspects to ensure all players are benefiting and developing from the coaches' practice.

Small Area Games - DATE TBD
The Instructional Stream - Small Area Games Clinic will provide coaches with an understanding of what small area games are, outline the developmental benefits of incorporating them into practice and introduce coaches to a variety of different games that they can take back to their teams. This seminar will also touch on the benefits of Small Space Drills and game-like scenario drills and how they can translate into success in your weekend games.

Developing Defensemen/Developing D Zone - DATE TBD
The Instructional Stream - Developing Defensemen Clinic will focus on the fundamental skills required of the position: transition skating, escapes and other tactical skating skills, basic breakout and transition habits as well as shooting. This seminar will look to support coaches on creating skilled defensemen in all areas of the ice.

The Instructional Stream - Goaltending Clinic will focus on the fundamental skills required of young goaltenders: proper stance, skating, movement and agility skills as well as introducing basic save skills. The clinic will also provide insight into how to communicate with goaltenders and best incorporate them into practice, including tips and tricks for making drills more goaltender-friendly.

Scoring goals is at a premium and is harder than ever with the way the game is now played. This seminar will go into different ways that your team can create offence. Topics will include cycling, entries, puck possession, support, shooting.

This part of the game has become increasingly relevant in recent years. Changing effectively and quickly from offence to defence and vice versa has been a notable reason for the recent success of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL. This clinic will give relative examples of how you can create similar structures and habits at a minor hockey level. The conversation will be based on: breakouts, regroups, puck-moving defensemen, gap control, entries.
