Marcus Beesley - Word Pro - Integrating Goalies Into Practices - Geared towards Coaches

In this presentation, Marcus will cover two main topics: 1) how to integrate goaltenders into team practices effectively, and 2) basic goaltending technique and how to teach/reinforce it in the absence of a dedicated goalie coach. These are two areas that are sometimes neglected but are of great importance to a team, and we hope that this presentation will assist coaches in strengthening their goaltenders without doing so at the expense of the rest of the team. CultureSmith Inc - Tony Harvie - Partner and BVHS President - Self Awareness, Self Regulation and Emotional Intelligence (Geared towards U13-U18 Players and Parents)

When I took the role of President for BVHS the one thing I wanted to focus was our U15 & U18 Age groups and offer them something beyond Hockey. I have put a lot of thought into this and what I truly believe kids in the U15 & U18 age group need is someone to connect with who isn’t their Parent, Teacher, Coach, Guidance Counsellor etc.

In my professional life I am Partner in a small firm that offers Executive Search services, Executive Coaching, Leadership Development programs, and Corporate Culture Programs. Everything we do is done through the lens of increasing Self Awareness, Self Regulation and Emotional Intelligence. We spend a significant amount of time understanding behavioral profile types, emotional triggers, why we have them, and what to do about them. This is stuff we firmly believe should be taught at a Grade 8 level and up.

The U13, U15 and U18  players in our association are growing up way too fast in a world that is going to constantly change on them. It is already hard for them and will get harder. What I want to do is offer my time to your Son or Daughter if you think they could benefit from simply talking to someone about where they are in life, where they want to go and how to get there.

At one point many many years ago I was teenager too. I played hockey, thought I was going to play hockey forever, then my life changed at 18 when my girlfriend became pregnant and 9 months later I was now a Dad. I was lucky to have very supportive parents but honestly it wasn't enough. I was now thrown into a world I wasn’t ready for, I had no idea who I really was or what I wanted to do or be. I needed someone to talk before then who could simply listen to me and provide just a little bit of support and guidance, kind of like a Mentor.

Looking back I wish someone would have started talking to me about my "Behavioral type", what jobs might interest me, what jobs will be needed, what a “career” is going to look like, that life is going to be hard but it will be okay if I am bold enough and brave enough to be vulnerable.

I know that most kids will not be comfortable having this type of conversation but I am happy to talk and listen to the ones that are. Sometimes having someone listen and talk to can flip a switch, give some clarity or even just a simple connection with someone can help. We all need it sometimes.

The Zoom call that I will be participating in on January 10 will introduce the concepts of Self Awareness, Self Regulation and Emotional Intelligence. We talk about behavioral profile types, emotional triggers, why we have them, and what to do about them.

After the call I will then send out a link to my calendar for players to book a time if they want to learn more about their own Personality, which jobs could interest them, what jobs will be needed and what a “career” is going to look like.

My intent with this is to simply offer something to our players that is separate from Hockey. I am not a Psychologist or Counsellor but I do have a very specific skill set and relatable life experiences to our young players, because of that I want to give them an opportunity to have a Mentor if they want one.
